RUGO, which has been raising money for twelve years to fund reconstruction projects in Rwanda after the genocide, now has a new venture, providing solar power to the small rural village of Karambi. In Rwanda darkness falls at six each evening for twelve hours. In rural villages studying and working in the evening is difficult, venturing outside can be hazardous.
RUGO Plans to raise £25,000 in 2011 to provide solar power to this village of 100 homes, to make the village safer and more productive. We will be working together with the world famous educational innovator Bunker Roy, founder of the Barefoot College in India. Our local partner in Rwanda will be the Rwanda Women’s Network.
The solar panel and lighting will be assembled and installed by women from the village, who will be trained at the Barefoot College in India. The villagers and Bunker Roy together will select the women – “Grannies” – who are committed to the future of their village. Travel and training for the “Grannies” will be paid for by the Indian Government.
RUGO is committed to funding the equipment: a solar panel for each house to light the home and charge both a portable lantern and the invaluable mobile phone.
Please help us to light up Karambi. If you can pledge or give £250 and we will light up a numbered house for your family. Click here to Donate or contact us on: stephen@wellsandcompany.co.uk, or linda@wellsandcompany.co.uk, and we will discuss ways in which you can help us to reach our target.
