April 2001 - A Time for Remembering

Two events were held in April in remembrance of the victims and survivors of the genocide in Rwanda in which lasted for 100 days in 1994 starting in April:

Remembering Genocide in Rwanda - Contributing to the Healing Process

From left - Linda Melvern; Yolanda Mukagasana; Dr Peter Hall; Dr Lillian WongSaturday April 7th a seminar was held looking back at the events and causes of the genocide -The seminar was chaired by Dr Lillian Wongand speakers included: Linda Melvern - Author of "A People Betrayed"; Dr Peter Hall - Human Rights worker in Kigali 1994; and Yolanda Mukagasana who gave a very moving testimony as a survivor of the genocide.

Delegates at the seminar being addressed by Richard MellorsThe seminar was organised by the Embassy of Rwanda and in addition to looking back at the causes and effect of the genocide also sought to look forward at how the country is rebuilding itself and organisations such as RUGO and SURF looked at the positive work being carried out in the country today.

 

Memorial Service in Remembrance of the Victims of Genocide in Rwanda

Sunday April 8th a memorial service was held in St Andrews church in Harrow. The moving service was led by Reverend Douglas Cockbill of St Andrews Church and included Rwandan and English Hymns and prayers and addresses from Her Excellency Rose Museminali and RUGO's Patron Baroness Chalker. Yolanda Mukagasana once again gave her testimony to the congregation of British and Rwandan supporters.
