RUGO CHARITY LAUNCH

In February 1999 RUGO was formally granted charity status. This was celebrated in a fund raising evening held in April in the National Liberal Club in Whitehall. Guest speakers included Oona King MP, Baroness Chalker and Professor Sydney Brandon.

Oona King talked about the importance of education in Africa, and also talked about her experiences during her visit in 1998 to Rwanda which moved her to set up an All Party Parliamentary Group. Baroness Chalker talked about her time that she spent in Rwanda immediately following the genocide, and Professor Brandon discussed his work in trauma counselling in Rwanda and the great need that still exists.

Music was provided by Peter Dodds who premiered a song he had written for Rwanda "Break the Silence". Steve Dagett formerly of Lindisfarne also performed together with Rwandan cultural dancing. Following the formal dance the audience was invited to join in.
