RUGO: Project to set up a Vocational School in Rwanda

In post-genocide Rwanda, the Government has adopted the strategy of rebuilding the skills to replace those of the hundreds of thousands of individuals killed. Education and, in particular, skills development figures high on the list of priorities.

It is in the light of this that there is a proposal to set up a multi-faceted vocational school.

It is envisaged that the school will train and produce skilled labour for each Prefecture on the level of artisans.

These will not only enhance their personal development, but will also support the Rwanda economy by producing and selling items relevant to the needs of the Rwandan society today.

It is also hoped that, this way, they will support the economy in the industrial, agricultural and business sectors.

The vocational school will comprise the following sectors:

Information Technology, Electrical Installation, Appropriate Technology and Plumbing, Electronics for TV and Radio Repair, Welding and Fabrication, Carpentry and Joinery, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Fitter and Turner, Masonry and Construction and Tailoring.

These various components of the vocational school are individually costed and, depending on the availability of funds, they may not all start at the same time.

RUGO has been approached with a view to initiating fund-raising activities for this important project.
