25/10/02 In the Kingdom of the Gorillas

Dr Amy Veddar of the Wildlife Conservation Society, and author of the above new book, spoke about her 30-year involvement with gorillas at the Royal Geographical Society in September. The evening, which was organised by tour operators Discovery Initiatives and Volcanoes Safaris, raised over £1500 for RUGO.

20/08/02 Fundraising Concert for RUGO

On July 26 and 27 2002, the Live Theatre in Newcastle was host to fundraising concerts in aid of RUGO funds to help the survivors of genocide in Rwanda. The charity concerts were organised by Peter Dodds, a local musician and record producer who first became involved with Rwanda when he was asked to support an Amnesty International concert some years ago by actor John Hurt. Peter has written a song for Rwanda called "Break the Silence" which opened both nights of the concert, which were compèred by John Tobler of RGF records. The two nights were awash with excellent local musicians who all gave up their time for free. The first night featured Prelude supported by the Steve Daggett (ex Lindisfarne) Acoustic Trio; and the second night the Caffrey Brothers supported by Sunderland musician Paul Liddell.

Rwandan dancers Bene Ubumwe travelled from London to support the event and the Rwandan Ambassador - Her Excellency Rosemary Museminali - was welcomed to Newcastle by the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, John Marshall. The event was also supported by the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Sunderland. Television documentary film-maker Kip Halsey has produced a film of the event which he has donated to RUGO for help with future fundraising ventures.  The enjoyable concert proved a great hit with the people of Newcastle, who previously had little knowledge and understanding of the needs in Rwanda. It has also opened up many new opportunities for support to the people of Rwanda through links with the North of England.
